Happy 2023!

 In Interior Designer Marketing

No, that’s not a typo – I really am wishing you a Happy 2023!

Why, you ask?

Because for so many interior designers running their own practices, the year 2020 is going to look a lot like the year 2019… which looked a lot like the year 2018… which looked a lot like 2017… and on and on, going back to the first year they started out in business.

Sure, maybe you had a “good” year in 2019. (Or maybe it was a tough year… but you had a pretty good year the year before that, right?)

Why is this the case?

Why does one year seem to pretty much resemble another?

There can be a number of reasons, but there’s pretty much only one that matters.

First: does this sound like you?

Year after year, it seems like you’re stuck in the same feast-or-famine cycle: you land a new project for a client, and that client turns out to be a good one. You move from one room to another, or maybe even on to a whole other home for them – like their vacation home.

Then somebody else in your world raises their hand, and you take them on, too. So for the next few months, you’re super busy with projects for your existing clients, and your calendar is packed.

Of course, during that time you’re too busy to market to get new clients – after all, you’re overwhelmed with work already, and you’d have to say “no” to anyone else who asked to hire you!

But then, those few projects for those few clients finish up, and you’re finally able to stop and take a breath…

Only to realize that – shoot – you don’t have any more clients or new projects!

So you get back to marketing: make a few phone calls, send a few emails, attend a few networking meetings, hope against hope that someone in your network needs help now… because paying your bills depends on it!

Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn’t. No matter what, though, it’s stressful as hell!

If you made it through 2019 and you’re still in business, congrats!

So many businesses closed their doors in 2019. So many designers will be working for someone else in 2020, rather than for themselves.

Go ahead and pat yourself on the back, because that won’t be you. You’re still here!

But if you’re stressed out from the pressure, feel like you’re neglecting your family, and would LOVE to take a vacation this year (it’s been a few years now, hasn’t it?), then you should know that it doesn’t have to be this way.
